Placement Problem Solving: Feeling uncomfortable doing something new

Many volunteers who have never taught before say that it is often difficult to know how to start
instructing because they feel like they are not qualified to teach anything. Similarly, it is common for people with no experience with infants, the elderly, or people with disabilities to struggle at first.

Placement Activity: "Caring for your teeth" project



Here is an idea from a volunteer in Costa Rica.  She used recycled materials to create a fun, educational module for children about the importance of dental hygiene.  Though her placement was working with children, she did a great job incorporating public health into the lesson plan!

Qualities of a Successful Volunteer

In all placements, there are similar traits that make a great volunteer.  We asked alumni, our staff, and the staff of our Partner Programs, and they gave us this list:
