Qualities of a Successful Volunteer

In all placements, there are similar traits that make a great volunteer.  We asked alumni, our staff, and the staff of our Partner Programs, and they gave us this list:

Successful Volunteers,

· Take initiative
The people at your placement may be pressed for time, so be a self starter!

· Have patience
Anticipate down time. Realize that change takes time.

· Are willing to help in any way necessary
This may mean making beds, organizing supplies, sweeping floors, or administrative tasks, depending on your placement.

· Focus on relationship building
Get to know local people, learn about the lives of those around you.

· Travel with an open mind
Have as few expectations and assumptions as possible.

· Remain flexible
Be ready for change!

· Foster Curiosity
You will have a better experience if you are genuinely interested in learning!

· Desire to be challenged
Embrace new ideas along the way

· Go with a Spirit of Adventure
Make the most of your experience!
