Placement Activity: Paper Plate Masks

This is a really fun activity for kids - I've seen it done all over the world, and it is always popular!  It is great for reinforcing creativity and imagination.

Activity/Idea name:
Paper Plate Masks

Brief description of the placement where you work (please include ages, number of people, languages spoken, other etc):
I worked with children at a day care center in Peru. The children varied in age from 2 to 14. This activity specifically attracted those children ages 4-10, but most of the kids participated. There were around 12-14 children that did this activity.

Goal of the activity:
This is a craft activity for creativity and imaginative play.

Required resources:
A pre-prepared paper plate with 2 pre-cut holes on either side and nose and eye holes pre-cut
A piece of craft string (wide & soft) to attach the mask to the face (as an alternative, you can use a popsicle stick to hold up the mask)
Markers, crayons, stickers, and other materials to decorate the mask

Step-by-step process:
Give each child a paper plate and ask them to decorate it and be creative! After this is decorated, help the child tie each end of the string to the pre-cut holes in the paper plate to attach to the face. After the mask is created, start with imaginative play. This could be around a theme for a play, or just to be silly.

Do you have any suggestions/improvements for the next time?

Keep in mind that masks limit the visibility of a child, so make sure the play area is clear of debris and doesn’t have steps that could injure a child.
