Placement Activity: Paper Bag Puppets

This is activity shows that stimulating a child's imagination is more important than what kinds of resources or decorations are accessible.  If you have the time and capability, it can be great fun to decorate and personalize a puppet as listed below.  However, even something as simple as a quickly drawn face onto a paper bag can provide hours of entertainment and creative exercises!

Activity/Idea name:
Paper Bag Puppets

Brief description of the placement where you work (please include ages, number of people, languages spoken, other etc):
I worked with children at a hospital in Morocco. These children were typically ages 4-10, but some of the children were young, who did not participate in the craft. There were approximately 8 children present.

Goal of the activity:
This is a craft activity for creativity and imaginative play. The goal is to create a puppet to put on a show around a theme.

Required resources:

  • A brown paper lunch bag
  • Stick-ons to create the face, such as fuzzy balls, buttons, pre-cut construction paper into shapes (circles, triangles), and pre-cut tongues
  • Markers and crayons
  • Glue
  • Colorful craft string to create hair for the puppet
Step-by-step process:
Give each child a paper bag and ask them to create their puppet. Put the materials in the center of the table, in several piles, to be shared. For younger children, you might want to keep the glue and help each child glue their selected pieces to the puppet.

Have the kids organize a puppet show to put on with their paper bag puppets. This is also a great way to get younger children, too young to participate, involved in the activity.
