Here is an activity that is great for volunteers who are teaching conversational English. It can work with older kids, adults, women's groups, etc. Experiment with different scenarios to see what the students find engaging and useful!
Activity/Idea name:
Shopping Spree!
Brief description of the placement where you work (please include ages, number of people, languages spoken, other etc):
I worked with adults 18+ who were learning conversational English skills. They wanted to learn about money, numbers, items, bartering skills, etc. We collected items from around the Home-Base and took sticky cards and wrote prices on them. We labeled all of the items with the price stickers and brought them to the placement where we set up a ‘store’ so the students could ‘shop’ and practice their skills!
Goal of the activity:
Practice practical English skills used for selling/purchasing items.

Required resources:
- Household items/ food/ clothing/ supplies (pens, pencils, paper, etc)
- Pretend money
Step-by-step process:
Collect items from the resource center and from around the Home-Base. Set up a store with a cashier (you the volunteer). Label all of the items with price tags. Have the students ‘shop’ from you. Ask them what they would like to see, have them barter for the price, etc.
Do you have any suggestions/improvements for the next time?

Have a bonus- choose some items that are not commonly known and see if the students can name the item in English!
